Introvert Whisperer / Why You Need a Personal Brand (Even If You Think You Don’t) - Introvert Whisperer Why You Need a Personal Brand (Even If You Think You Don’t) Personal branding is one of those terms that are largely unclear or misinterpreted. As a result, some experts in the field are steering away from the term altogether. But I like the term. I think it’s filled with meaning and can see why Tom Peters (business guru) coined the term a decade ago. What Is Branding? To get you clear, let’s first look at this from a purely marketing point of view, since that’s where this term came from. Wiki defines branding as: “Name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one sellers goods or service as distinct from those of other sellers.”People engaged in branding seek to develop or align the expectations behind their brand experience, creating the impression that a brand associated with a product or service has certain qualities or characteristics that make it special or unique. In other words, when you see a McDonald s and eat at a McDonalds, you think of certain visual images, as well as a consistent eating experience and environment. You’re very clear this isn’t going to be a fine dining experience; you know what to expect. That’s what branding does for the buyer. It helps them know where to go to have a specific product or service and experience. How Do You Make Branding Personal? To translate that for your usage, personal branding is what identifies you from another person and what other people can expect when “experiencing” or being with you. In the work context, it’s your work reputation and what people come to value about you. Your personal brand is unique to you. There’s no one else out there with the same constellation of skills and personal behaviors you have. Granted, there may be others with greater expertise than you, but we aren’t talking about a comparison when it comes to personal branding; we’re talking about only you and how you are viewed by others. For example, let’s look at Oprah’s personal brand. Visually, Oprah wears color and smiles. You see pictures of her touching and making contact with people. In her work, her focus is on being curious about the world, supporting the best in others and personal development. You could say many other things about what we expect out of her and how we experience her. All of that is consistent and clear to those of us watching her. We’d all be shocked if she suddenly got cranky and negative. To summarize your personal brand: It’s unique to you. It’s your reputation. It’s how others experience you and what they value about you. It’s what others expect and seek you out for. It’s also what YOU want to be known for. Why Does Personal Branding Matter? With those things in mind, now the big question is: Why is awareness of your personal brand important to your career? Here are 3 very good reasons: 1. If you’re aware of your personal brand and it’s consistent with your career goals, you want to reinforce it so people very clearly understand what you’re all about. It helps people remember you when it’s critical. (Click here to tweet this thought.) 2. If you’re ready to make a change in your career status in the foreseeable future, you want to think through how your brand needs to change so others start “seeing” you at this new level. 3. If you aren’t going where you want in your career, you probably have a mismatch between your personal brand and your aspirations. That means you have to do something to align those two things. You will only go as far as your personal brand supports. Your personal brand is always there, whether you understand it or are deliberate about managing it or not. You will find that if you pay attention to it and continually align it to your career goals, you’ll be more successful at attaining these career goals. There are sites with tutorials and free presets.  To install a preset, you can just follow the instructions on the site, download the file, and open them in Lightroom. Click on “Import”, ensuring that you create a special folder for your presets.To use your favourite presets, you just need to right-click and select it. You can then modify them if you don’t like them.Removing Red-Eye with LightroomIn low-light photos where a flash has been used, the subjects’ eyes can appear red. Don’t worry! You can fix this with Lightroom.Click on the “Develop” module. Zoom into the part of the photos and click “Red-eye Correction” on the right of the screen.  Place the cross on the eye you need to correct, adjust the dimensions of the circle and then using the size and pupil tool you can darken the red-eye effect.  You can do the same for the second eye. Practice is the Key to this Young Cello Players Success Practice is the Key to this Young Cello Players Success Keya, 11-years-old, Math Level K “Mastering music is more than learning technical skills. Practicing is about quality, not quantity. Some days I practice for hours; other days it will be just a few minutes.” â€" Yo-Yo Ma, Cellist Yo-Yo Ma is considered one of today’s most recognized classical musicians. A testament to his ability as a cello player, Ma has recorded over 90 albums and  is a 19-time Grammy Award Winner. Long before the awards and world-renowned performances, Ma was often referred to as a “child prodigy” â€" a title that has been given to classical music legends like Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn. Ma began playing the cello at the age of four and recalls integrating a daily routine of rigorous practice early on. It’s no wonder he had memorized three of Johann Sebastian Bachs solo suites by the time he was five. Today, he attributes his success and fame to practice and perseverance through rigorous study. Taking a page out of Ma’s book, 11-year-old Keya has discovered that practice is the key to unlocking her success as a budding cello player. She first discovered the importance of practice when she enrolled in the Kumon Math Program at the age of nine. Through daily practice and perseverance, she quickly advanced through the program and is currently studying three years above grade level. She was able to apply some of those key skills in her music. “Kumon has taught me patience and resilience,” said Keya. “I apply this same perseverance when I am practicing solo pieces on the cello. If I don’t know how a melody is supposed to sound l, I work through it and find that it’s helpful to learn from my mistakes.” Outside of the classroom, Keya enjoys practicing Bharatanatyam (a form of Indian classical dance), writing for the school paper, and swimming. From years of horseback riding, Keya formed a love for animals. Her passion will fuel her future aspirations of becoming a veterinarian. Keya’s hard work and discipline didn’t go unnoticed, as she was one of 55 students selected to attend the 2018 Kumon Student Conference in Calgary, Canada. We had the opportunity to speak to Keya about her Kumon journey. How has Kumon helped you inside of the classroom? Kumon has helped me understand math theories that are far above my grade level. I owe many of my academic achievements to Kumon. My peers often come to me for help with their homework, and I’ve joined advanced math clubs in school. What is the most beneficial thing you’ve learned in Kumon? Aside from all the advanced math concepts I have learned through Kumon, the most beneficial thing I’ve learned is to believe in myself. I never get upset when I don’t understand a new concept right away, because I know that with practice and guidance, I will master it. Tips From an Irvine English Tutor 5 Writing Tips Tips From an Irvine English Tutor: 5 Tips to Help You be a Great Student Writer Tips From an Irvine English Tutor: 5 Tips to Help You be a Great Student Writer Communicating in the written word is one of the most essential skills that any student can have regardless of their grade level. However, it’s especially important for college prep students to master the art of writing so they can produce a killer personal statement, write a fabulous SAT or ACT essay, and produce high quality writing in general from research papers to basic emails. Many students love to write and will focus on the written word with ease, however most students suffer from a long-term case of writers block (which is very common) and may procrastinate when it comes to improving writing skills. Here are a few tips from an Irvine English tutor that students, regardless of their current skill level, can practice to improve upon their writing ability. 1. Use practice writing prompts Students who wait to work with the writing prompt that is given to them by an AP exam, or the SAT or ACT, may find themselves entirely overwhelmed. As a way to avoid this type of anxious writer’s block, students are encouraged to practice responding to prompts that don’t emit the pressure that a standardized exam would. Practice makes perfect in many things and this certainly holds true when it comes to writing. The more a student writes the more they become comfortable and confident as a writer, thus making their quality and flow better with time (Read: 4 Last Minute Things to do Before Going Back to School). 2. Read works from the great writers of the past (but also focus on modern writers) Students are usually introduced to the great books list and famous writers of the past within the school environment. However, students will need to write informally in many situations and this style of writing isn’t generally found in historic literature.   In order to be a good writer, both formally and informally, students are encouraged to read text and periodicals from modern writers. These could come in the form of a nonfiction book, blog, newspaper, or magazine. Basically, the more students read the more they’re likely to become a skilled writer. 3. Write about something you know and like Students are encouraged to write about things they know about when they are attempting to improve upon their skill and ability. For example, the student could write about their passion for skateboarding or surfing rather than discuss why they would like to attend a particular university. Although this later prompt will eventually be something everyone will have to write about, it’s not the first thing they have to learn. Write now, edit later Many students get overwhelmed trying to write a “perfect” essay or passage. This will generate very few sentences written over a very long period of time. A better way to start out is to simply write. Students shouldn’t be concerned with typos, misspellings, grammar errors, or even content in the first draft. Once they have the initial draft down, they can edit for content and then later edit for grammar. As with most good writers, it’s better to write now and edit later. 5. Get some constructive criticism Another great way for students to learn what direction they need to take their writing in is to get some constructive criticism. They can ask their teacher to talk with them after school, consult a tutor, or join a writing club. It’s important for students to talk to somebody who has experience in the field so they can understand how to go about getting their thoughts across in a concise and effective manner. Regardless of a person’s future career choice or major field of study, written communication is an essential part of education and life in general. Students who take the time to improve their writing skills in high school have a better chance of being accepted to a college on their top 10 list and will also have a better chance of communicating with potential colleagues, professors, supervisors, and friends.
